Skin gets the marketing budget, but joints are where some of the older, arguably stronger collagen research actually sits. It’s a separate body of evidence from the skin-elasticity studies, using different doses and, in a fair number of cases, a different form of collagen entirely.

Two distinct approaches show up in the joint literature, and mixing them up is the most common mistake in how this gets written about. The first is hydrolyzed collagen peptides, the same broken-down form used in most skin studies, taken at higher doses, often 8 to 10 grams a day, over several months. Multiple trials in people with knee osteoarthritis or general joint discomfort from exercise report modest reductions in pain scores compared to placebo. The effect size is real but not dramatic, closer to “noticeably less stiff getting up” than “pain gone.”

The second approach is undenatured type II collagen, sold under names like UC-II, at a much smaller dose, around 40 milligrams a day. This works through a different mechanism entirely, an oral tolerance effect on the immune system rather than supplying raw material for joint tissue. It’s a completely different ingredient from the peptides in your morning collagen scoop, despite sharing the word “collagen” on the label, and the two shouldn’t be assumed interchangeable.

If your collagen powder lists hydrolyzed peptides, which is what most drinkable collagen products including Carrara are, you’re in the first category. The joint research supports continued daily use over months rather than weeks, at doses generally higher than the lower end of the skin-study range, closer to 8 to 10 grams than 2.5. If you’re taking a collagen product specifically hoping for joint relief and it’s sitting at 2 or 3 grams a serving, you’re likely under the dose that’s actually been tested for that purpose, even if it’s adequate for the skin research.

Worth being honest about the limits here too. Most of the strongest joint trials were done in older adults or people with diagnosed osteoarthritis, not healthy younger people looking for general prevention. If you’re taking collagen at 25 for joint health with no current symptoms, you’re extrapolating past where the evidence actually reaches, which isn’t the same as saying it does nothing, just that nobody’s specifically shown it in your situation.

Image notes: a photo focused on hands or knees in an active context (stretching, walking), avoiding anything overly clinical. Stock search terms: “active senior stretching outdoors”, “joint mobility exercise”.
